Do I need to buy triple pane windows or are there double pane windows that are nearly as efficient?

Most window manufacturers make a dual pane with two layers of low e that can get you a U factor of .25

In most climates and for most purposes U-0.25 windows will be just fine, even for getting all the way to zero energy performance. There are several other factors to consider with windows. These have been thoroughly described on our page called Specify Highly Insulated Windows & Doors.
