My husband I have just renovated a small house and made it very energy efficient and air tight. We decided to use ordinary vent fans on a timer to ventilate the house. These fans seem to be sucking out a lot of the warm air.
There is no way to add a central ERV with ducting in this small house and it would be too big and expensive. I saw there are spot ERVs available for around $400.00. Are they worth the price? Will we get any substantial energy savings from them compared to our direct vent on a timer?

The spot ERV is made by Panasonic and they call it the Whisper Comfort. I'm familiar with several installations and the occupants were happy with the performance. These ventilation systems move 40 cubic feet per minute maximum, which is a relatively small amount of air. They should run continuously for general, background ventilation. You don't mention where your current fans are located. If they are doing double-duty as bathroom ventilators, you'll need to them in place to more quickly clear the bathroom of moisture and odors.

You might also look into a new product from Germany called Lunos. These are "through-the-wall" heat recovery ventilators that we profiled in a recent blog post. You would probably want the Lunos eGo model for a bathroom.
